Event Description
Happy Easter – Public Holiday
In Vanuatu, not only Easter Sunday, but also Easter Monday and Good Friday are public holidays. The large majority of the population is Christian, mostly Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Anglican, and so most people are keen to keep up Easter festivities.
On Good Friday, people from many churches may go on the “seven stations of the cross” journeys, re-enacting the sufferings of Jesus. And often, there are re-enactments of the Lord’s Supper and the foot washing example left by Jesus on Holy Thursday just before Good Friday.
Some will attend midnight masses on Holy Saturday to welcome “Resurrection Morning.” And services on Easter itself are of course common. There are also other traditions like egg hunts, consumption of hot cross buns, and Easter youth camps, which are often held on the beaches.
