Father Walter Lini Day
THIS YEAR WILL MARK THE 21st YEAR OF CELEBRATING LINI’S DAY.
Theme : PEACE IS POWERFUL SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL
our Traditional sense of community is both wise and practical
This day was set as a National public holiday on the year 1999 to commemorate the death of Vanuatu’s first Prime minister & founder of independence, Late Father Walter Hadye Lini.
Relatives & community leaders from his island perform customs ceremonies on the eve of 21st through to the 21st of February to pay respect as he was also a highly respected chief on the island of Pentecost.
Every year, national leaders gather at two different venues to commemorate the Lini Day. Some national leaders usually travel to North Pentecost to gather at the tomb of the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu. A church service is conducted, followed by laying of wreaths at his tomb with speeches, customary ceremony and traditional feast.
Leaders from different centers on the island of Pentecost would travel long distances to partake in the Lini memorial day at his tomb at Nazareth in North Pentecost.
In the capital, Port Vila, other national leaders attend the Lini memorial service at the Anglican Church Parish at Tagabe where a memorial church service usually takes place followed by laying of wreaths at the Lini memorial stone, speeches by national leaders and public lunch.
